Don Hallas, Trumpet (Don passed away November 5, 2002. He was a band member since 1995, and shall be missed. His obituary follows - HALLAS, DR. [Donald J. Hallas]., 74, of St. Petersburg, died Tuesday (Nov. 5, 2002) at St. Anthony's Hospital. He was born in Sharon Hill, Pa., he came here in 1955. He graduated in 1953 from Albright College and received a doctor of optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1964. He retired as a Navy commander and served during the Korean War. He was an optometrist for more than 38 years, most recently at the Suncoast Eye Clinic. He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in St. Petersburg and its choir, and was a Eucharistic minister. He was a past gold coat president of the Breakfast Sertoma, past president of the St. Petersburg Little Theatre and worked with the Lions Club for 15 years doing eye exams for the needy. He was a member of the Awesome Original 2nd Time Arounders Marching Band. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Martha "Marty"; a daughter, Christy Hallas, St. Petersburg; a son, Gary Hallas, Boca Raton; and a sister, Marion Messick, Sharon Hill, Pa. - Ed.)

I had been in marching bands from junior high and high schools since 8th grade. I joined the Rounders in 1988 playing the flute, then in 1989, I switched to majorette since that was my long time dream to twirl my baton in a marching band. I stayed thru 1991, then left when I had David in 1992. I couldn't rejoin because of health problems partly caused by the pregnancy and spent nearly 9 years to get better and stronger. Rejoined in 2001 to see if I could do it again and keep up; realized I didn't have the strength I used to have before 92. I truly enjoyed being with the band during the short time I was a member. I still support the band and what they stand for, and they are the most AWESOME BAND IN THE COUNTRY EVER!! Bill is a great director and deserves a huge award for the twenty years he's put into this effort. This is his baby from day one! KEEP IT GOING, ROUNDERS for another twenty years!!! YOU DESERVE IT!!!!!!"

I currently play with the Tampa Community Band and the Sunshine Brass, but have blown euphonium constantly since high school. I was a member of the 79th Army Band, have played in college, grad school and community bands wherever I have lived. I don't have the greatest lip but am one hell of a sight reader. I am also a big time supporter of Drum & Bugle Corp music and have attended DCI national championships in Orlando the past 2 years and already have my tickets for next August!"
